ARTIST BIO/STATEMENT/CV

ARTIST BIO American artist Maryam Ali (b. 1985) is a nationally collected, freelance artist best known for her contemporary abstract art pieces using mixed media. With equal creative passion and talent in painting, photography and writing she creates narrative and non-narrative art that is about feeling, emotions and moods evoked. Entirely self taught, her interest in the study of contemporary art and other fine and pop art forms came recently in 2012. However, Maryam has been in touch with her creative abilities since a young child and has used art as a way to express what most eludes her. Creativity has always been a talent/skill she uses to maneuver through, deconstruct, reinvent and refresh aspects of her life. Her art influences include Pablo Picasso, Matisse, Frida Kahlo, Dorothy Ganek, Anthony Lister, Basquiat, and her own personal muses. In 2018, Maryam’s art was showcased at two local art exhibitions: “Trips Around the Sun” & “One Word” and she has also curated two exhibitions of her own. She has acquired several national collectors since deciding to pursue arts professionally in 2016 and is continually evolving and maturing as an artist on different platforms. ARTIST STATEMENT My art was conceived through a cathartic method and a way to express what I couldn’t emotionally or verbally in everyday life. It’s a truthful, honest approach, at times a bit selfish, but full of emotion, and layers, and textures, vulnerability and truthfulness. I have no directions or rules when I am creating. When I am truly in it I feel outside of it. As if the brush is stroking itself. Through my art I have never felt so hidden and safe yet so fully exposed. Through my art I am able to immortalize, places, lovers, feelings and moments that are ultimately passing through me like the wind.
